A Sad Day

Friends,

You may have heard some talk lately  about a tiny little city in the heart of North Dakota named Minot experiencing one of it’s darkest hours. Because of a real bitch of a winter and heavy rainstorms in the surrounding areas, the Souris (French for ‘mouse’) River is rising to a level nobody had thought possible up until a few weeks ago. Towards the beginning of June, we had a mandatory evacuation for around 9,000 people in the center of Minot due to unsafe river levels. Though that initial panic subsided, June turned out to be one of the rainiest months in Minot’s history, and just this Monday, the evacuation was reinstated and expanded. The past two days have been a whirlwind of heavy trucks hauling clay to reinforce the dikes and families up and down the street loading the most important of their belongings and heading to higher ground. As I write this, the air raid sirens are sounding, letting people know that it’s no longer safe to be in the valley. The river is flowing over the dikes. 12,000 people in Minot are without homes.

Unfortunately, all of us in Atom’s Rite currently live or have relatives who live within the evacuation zones. Current estimates are reporting that water levels will be seven feet higher than those of the devastating flood we experienced in 1969. Our studio and all of our equipment have been moved to higher ground, and as you can probably imagine, music has been the furthest thing from our minds these past few weeks. The water is expected to sit in the valley of Minot for around two weeks, and after that, the clean-up can begin. This does not bode well for the status of our album. We have received the reference lacquer and it sounds incredible, and we will push forward as much as time and weather will allow, but I can’t help feeling like this record release will end up being even later still. We’re obviously worried about the safety and wellbeing of our families, friends, and irreplaceable possessions above all else. We appreciate your patience and understanding thus far, and will do everything we can to try and get this thing out (finally), but as of this moment, it’s taken a backseat to more urgent and disastrous matters.

We hope you’ll understand everything that our little city is going through. The reports are not good (one National Guard representative referred to a worst case scenario map as a ‘once in 500 years flood event.’) I’m not worried about the Magic City getting back on it’s feet, but the fight just began when the water topped the levees, and it will not be easy.

If you have anything you can do to help, please contact the Minot Red Cross at http://www.minotredcross.org/, or contact us through the site.

Thank you, and be safe,

Jake, Jason, Andy, and Max.

First Single is Up!

Also: Referring to it as a ‘Single’ feels unbelievably dirty.

Regardless, “The Market for Lemons” is available for you to stream or download for free over here. (Although we would prefer you download it. Streaming sounds so, so gross.) Please share it with everyone you’ve ever met, burn it to a CD, remix it, etc. The recording (though not the artwork) is available to be used under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, which you can read all about right here, if you so desire.

This, of course, means that the album is nearly done. We’ve finished mastering, and it’s on it’s way to the pressing plant in a matter of days. You’ve all been super patient with us, and we sincerely appreciate it. Due to the way BandCamp works, we can’t let you download the entire album without having it up streaming first, and streaming is a less than ideal way to experience an album for the first time. Rest assured, we’ll give it to you all at once for free (digitally) once we can figure something out.

Anyway, thanks for everything! Spread that link!

Two Shows This Weekend.

First, on Saturday: Beaver Town Get Down, underneath Planet Pizza. We’re playing with Crooked Gospel, Jazmine Wolff, and a host of other great local acts. Oh, there’s pizza. And beer (with ID), too. 18+ (I’m assuming). The whole thing’s a benefit for the ever worthwhile Pangea House, and it would be in your best interest to plop down the $10, gorge yourself on pizza, and listen to great music for five hours. What else were you going to do on Saturday, play Portal 2 (yes)? If I’m making an exception, you can, too.

Then: Sunday, we’re playing at Pangea House. The whole thing starts at 7, and this one costs $5.

Two AR shows in two days? Yet another sign the end is nigh. Party down while the horsemen ride.

Mixing is complete!

Last night we finished mixing the album. It is a pretty intense feeling to be done, for the period of creating this specific work to be over. It has been something we have been working on for a long time. It has been a marathon. We’re pretty proud of what we have created. This is an album, with two distinct sides, it works best in that format. If you like the band, or are interested in the album at all, please spend the $12 on the vinyl. It is the way we intend for it to be experienced, for whatever that is worth. A great deal of stuff is coming up, and we are unspeakably excited to share it all with you. Keep your eyes peeled, we’ll keep you posted. You are the best.

Record Store Day and Blue Sunday!

Atom’s Rite is playing at Budget Music & Video in celebration of Record Store Day! (We’re also probably going to spend a lot of money on limited edition records, which we encourage you all to do as well). If you’re in the Minot area, please come down today at noon to see High On Stress (Minneapolis via Minot), the Crooked Gospel, and ourselves!

THEN, on (Blue) Sunday, we’re playing the Crooked Gospel yet again, along with our good friends in Merick. This one takes place at the Blue Rider, somewhere’s around 8 PM, and, unfortunately, it is 21+. If you qualify, come on down! (But don’t worry, younguns, we’ve got some more shows lined up in the coming months. Stay tuned.)

…and we’re mastering (soon, anyway)

Wouldn’t you know it, on the day in which we lamented the delays, a date from our mastering engineer. April 28. Which means the digital copy of the album will be available soon. We can’t wait to share these songs with all of you.
